Marine Turbocharger Servicing and Repair in the UAE

A turbocharger rarely fails all at once. What usually happens is slower. Exhaust temperatures creep up. The engine loses power gradually. There is a faint whine from the compressor housing that was not there six months ago. Oil starts showing up in the charge air cooler. By the time the crew reports it, the turbocharger has been degrading for weeks, and the engine is already compensating.

Turbomot Marine Engineering handles turbocharger inspection, servicing, and overhaul for commercial and industrial vessels across UAE waters. We work out of our Sharjah workshop at Industrial Area 13, and we also mobilise to vessels in port when schedules are tight.

When to schedule turbocharger servicing

Overhaul intervals depend on running hours, fuel quality, and operating conditions. But there are warning signs that tell you servicing is due sooner.

On the performance side

Increased exhaust gas temperature, reduced power output at normal RPM, black or dark exhaust smoke under load, and higher fuel consumption with no matching increase in output.

On the mechanical side

Audible whine or scraping from the turbocharger housing, oil in the charge air cooler or air intake manifold, excessive shaft play you can feel by hand, visible blade tip contact marks on the compressor housing bore.

If any of these show up, get the turbocharger inspected. Continued operation with a degrading turbocharger causes secondary damage to the engine that costs significantly more to fix.

We service marine transmission systems across a wide range of power ratings for both propulsion and auxiliary applications.

How we approach turbocharger servicing

Every turbocharger that comes through our workshop follows the same sequence. We do not skip steps.

01
Step

Intake assessment and condition logging

The unit is inspected externally before anything gets disassembled. We document visual condition, record bearing play, and look for contact damage, oil leakage, or heat distortion on the casing.
02
Step

Complete disassembly

The turbocharger is stripped to individual components. Compressor wheel, turbine wheel, rotor shaft, bearings, seals, nozzle ring, housing. Everything separated and cleaned.
03
Step

Dimensional inspection and measurement

Each component is measured against OEM specifications. Bearing journal diameters, shaft runout, blade tip clearances, seal groove dimensions. All recorded, all compared to acceptable tolerances.
04
Step

Component repair or replacement

Worn or damaged parts get replaced with genuine OEM components. Bearings, seals, and thrust collars are replaced as standard. Compressor and turbine wheels are assessed for erosion, pitting, or blade damage.
05
Step

Rotor balancing

The reassembled rotor is dynamically balanced. This is not optional. An unbalanced rotor causes premature bearing wear and will bring the turbocharger back to the workshop far sooner than it should be.
06
Step

Reassembly and final clearance checks

The complete unit goes back together with all new consumables. Axial and radial clearances are verified one last time before the turbocharger is cleared for return to service.

Vessels and applications we support across the UAE

We service turbochargers across a range of commercial vessel types operating in the Arabian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.

OEM Partnerships for Marine Turbocharger Service

Turbomot holds authorised service partnerships that ensure every marine gearbox repair uses genuine components and follows factory-standard procedures.

Turbomot is an authorised partner for MAN and FPT Industrial marine engines, covering sales, service, and parts. Turbocharger work on these engine platforms is carried out using genuine manufacturer specifications, tooling data, and original parts.

For vessels running other engine makes, our workshop team has over four decades of hands-on experience with a broad range of marine turbocharger configurations. Contact our team to discuss your setup.

Workshop and port-side service

Our service yard at Industrial Area 13 in Sharjah is set up for full turbocharger strip-down, inspection, balancing  and reassembly. Units can be shipped to us or dropped off directly by vessel agents.

For vessels on tight turnaround, we go to the ship. We provide onboard turbocharger inspection and servicing at ports across the UAE: Port Khalid in Sharjah, Jebel Ali and Port Rashid in Dubai, Khor Fakkan, and Fujairah. The team mobilises with tooling and parts to keep your vessel’s alongside time as short as possible.

FAQ's of our Marine Turbocharger Servicing and Repair in the UAE

How long does a turbocharger overhaul take?

It depends on the unit, the extent of wear, and parts availability. We do not quote a fixed number because every turbocharger comes in different. If you have an operational deadline, tell us upfront and we will work around it where possible.

Can you service turbochargers onboard while the vessel is in port?

Yes. We do in-port inspection and servicing across major UAE ports. If the turbocharger needs dynamic balancing, it comes back to our Sharjah workshop for that step.

What turbocharger brands do you work on?

Our core work covers turbochargers fitted to MAN and FPT Industrial marine engines. For other engine platforms, call our service team and we will confirm what we can do.

How do I know if my turbocharger needs servicing?

Rising exhaust temperatures, power loss, black smoke under load, oil in the charge air system, unusual noise from the housing. Any of these means it is time to get the unit inspected before the problem spreads to the engine.

Do you supply turbocharger spare parts?

Yes. Bearings, seals, thrust collars, nozzle rings, rotor assemblies. All sourced through our authorised OEM supply channels.
